19-30 October 2009

The first Compass conference was held entirely online 19th – 30th October 2009 and was sponsored byCompass Journals.  Even though the conference is now over there are still several ways you can participate. All the content is free and will remain on this site for you to browse.

The largest online meeting of minds in the social sciences and humanities!

In these days of increasing fragmentation and hyper-specialisation in academia, our eight Compass Journals aim to foster connections amongst scholars. To further this cause, Wiley-Blackwell and the Compass Journals Editors-in-Chief organised this online conference to promote interdisciplinary approaches.

The first Compass conference aimed to cut across academic boundaries – within and between disciplines, between theory and practice, approaches and methodologies by providing a space for multi- and cross-disciplinary review

The overall theme of the conference was ‘Breaking Down Barriers’. The conference papers and keynote lectures tackled one or more of the following sub-themes:

• Paradigms
• Borders
• The Environment/Energy
• Communication
• Justice/Human Rights

The conference papers  showcase Compass’ multi-disciplinary dimension. The Conference featured readers and authors from the eight distinct disciplines covered by the Compass JournalsHistory, Literature, Philosophy, Religion, Geography, Linguistics, Sociology, and Social Psychology.

Each conference paper was presented and discussed during the conference alongside two commissioned commentaries, leading into a debate between delegates, commentators and the author.

Following the conference final revised versions of the papers presented were published in the relevant Compass journal.

Keynote speakers include:

* PROFESSOR ROGER GRIFFIN – Oxford Brookes University (History/Politics/Religion)
* PROFESSOR DAVID CRYSTAL – University of Wales, Bangor (Language/Linguistics)
* DR ROY BAUMEISTER – Florida State University (Social Psychology)
* PROFESSOR PETER LUDLOW – Northwestern University (Philosophy)
* DR EILEEN JOY – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Literature)
* PROFESSOR MARK MACKLIN – University of Wales, Aberystwyth (Physical Geography)

In addition to the conference papers and keynote addresses, we offerd a series of publishing workshops, ‘Meet the Keynote Speaker’ Q&A sessions, a book exhibit, musical entertainment and a SecondLife cocktail bar.
